What Does a Current Transformer do?
As the principal function of a current transformer is to determine the current in a circuit, current transformers are often used when a current or voltage is too high to measure directly. They are also known as step-down transformers, as they are able to reduce or “step-down” current levels from thousands of amperes to a standard output, either 5 Amps or 1 Amp.
Current transformers are used to monitor high-voltage lines throughout the power grid, for detecting overcurrent, undercurrent, peak current, or average current conditions. They are typically found in generating stations, electrical substations and commercial electric power distribution, and are also used in domestic electric meters to measure electrical usage.
